This year, Chris Reecer was honored to receive three awards at the Plains Art Association’s 64th Annual Juried Spring Celebration of Art, currently on display at the Abraham Art Gallery at Wayland Baptist University in Plainview, Texas.
The exhibition features artwork from artists across the region and was juried by Lubbock artist and educator Pauline Mills. Chris’s work was recognized both for artistic excellence and for its thoughtful use of color and light.
Chris received the Dr. E.C. and Mrs. Lil H. Nicholl Family Award for Best Concept of Color and Light for his painting Self Portrait in Prussian Blue. The work explores identity, reflection, and mood through a limited palette built around the rich, atmospheric qualities of Prussian blue. This work also won the People’s Choice Award!
The painting captures a quiet, introspective moment. Strong contrasts between light and shadow create a sense of depth, while the monochromatic treatment draws attention to expression, gesture, and form rather than distraction by color.
First Place in Oils

Chris also earned First Place in the Oil Category for 2-2, a painting that highlights both technical skill and careful observation. The work focuses on a dancer at rest, balancing strength and delicacy through subtle shifts in light, texture, and composition.
The painting invites viewers to pause and consider the moments between movement and performance. Rather than emphasizing action, it celebrates preparation, discipline, and grace.
About the Exhibition
The Plains Art Association’s 64th Annual Juried Spring Celebration of Art is on display at the Abraham Art Gallery on the campus of Wayland Baptist University through June 28, 2026. The public reception and awards presentation will be held from 1:00–3:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 28, with the awards presentation beginning at 1:45 p.m.
A Note of Gratitude
